In the past, dogs under 6 months old were not put into training classes. There were even trainers who believed that a puppy who was 12 months old was just the right age to begin training. Today’s popular belief is that the dog’s first few months are the best and most important time to start training. The following are some reasons to begin training early.

• Puppies wake up every day ready to learn whatever you will teach them.

• Puppies have no opinion of certain situations and actions. Because of this, they are able to learn things rather quickly.

• They will pick up on and learn what is good and bad and what earns them praise, whether we try to teach them or not.

• Puppies can be trained into charming and obedient pets, primarily because they have no bad habits for the trainer to overcome.

While there are many ways that you can train your dog, I always prefer the kindest method. The following is a quick summary of training tips for puppies.

1) Opportunity Training – Without the puppy ever understanding that it is a “training session”, you begin to train him.

2) Attention Training – Before I give a new command, I wait until the puppy is actually doing what I am going to command him to do. I then introduce him to the “Watch” command as he is waiting to receive his reward. Because puppies have a very short attention span, you must reward him immediately.

3) The Sit – Get the attention of your puppy by allowing him to sniff the treat that you are holding as you kneel. Raise your hand slightly higher than your puppy’s head. Since it will be simpler for the puppy to see the tidbit while sitting, he will do so. After the pup is sitting, praise him and give him the sit command. Do this only after the puppy is performing the correct behavior. This sequence may need to be repeated 9 or 10 times.

4) The Down – Start this command the same was as you began the ’sit’ command. At this point, you should hide the food from your puppy by covering it with your open hand (palm down). He will try different things in order to get the treat. He may not see it, but he will still smell the food. Your puppy will then likely try to move your hand away from the food by nudging it with his nose. After this, the puppy will see that by lying down his task will be made easier. As soon as your puppy lies down, while he is in this position, command him ‘down’, and give him praise and a reward for his good behavior.

5) The Recall – The recall command is one of the most important that a puppy can learn. It is important for his safety and for his behavior around others. While the dog is ready to learn commands such as sit, and down, he can also learn the recall command. Have another person kneel on the ground and hold on to the dog. Kneel or sit on the floor a yard or two away from your dog. To get the puppy’s attention, you can put both of your hands out in front of you. Command your dog to ‘come’. Before your helper releases the dog, make sure that you have the full attention of the puppy. When your puppy is running, use lots of excitement while commanding him again to “Come”. Immediately give him his reward upon arrival. Only teach your puppy one command at a time. Do not try to make him lay down, sit, or stop at the same time. Repeat the same exercise as many times as needed until the puppy understands it.

It is important to know that the youngest of puppies can learn a lot very fast. Puppies can learn quite quickly with the aid of proper skill and a positive attitude. The real benefit to training it that it helps to build a dogs confidence in it’s owner and allows it to bond to that person. Training exercises should be fun. The dog should feel playful and relaxed while learning. If it is fun for the puppy, he or she will WANT to learn more things.

Punishment may be used for bad behavior, although methods are different for dogs as they are in children. There should be no hitting or physical punishment: rather, a simple no will be sufficient. (Don’t overdo it; you don’t want to ruin the bond between you and your puppy.)

Teething A Special Interest In Puppy Training: One special behavioral problem most owners see is teething.

This is the period where puppies bite and chew anything they can fit their mouth around. This behavior can be tough to cure, but it is far from impossible.

Keep in mind that you should never physically reprimand a puppy. If a puppy does not respect you, it will continue the biting sometimes making it worse. Instead, it is recommended that you socialize the puppy with better-mannered adult dogs. They will essentially see good behavior and mimic it.

If there is no role model to be found- keep in mind that the main reason teething occurs is because of fear or aggression. Even when the slightest sign of teething returns, be strict: never send mixed signals to a puppy.

House Training a Puppy: To housebreak a puppy, there are a few established rules that can get the job done.

First, feed the puppy on a regular schedule- this will ensure that bathroom breaks are regular. Second, establish a specific bed area and toilet area for the puppy; make the distinction so that the puppy is aware that sleeping and using the bathroom in the same area is generally a bad idea. Lastly, make sure that good toilet behavior is rewarded, while poor toilet behavior is penalized in some shape or form.

Could You Use Some Housebreaking a Puppy Tips

Housebreaking a puppy should be based on prevention rather than punishment. A key to housebreaking a puppy, or dog for that matter, is close supervision. In just a matter of seconds your puppy can have an accident, so to help prevent that from occurring you should watch for signs that your puppy needs to potty.

If your puppy starts to run in circles, sniffing at the door. or suddenly runs out of site, than they are trying to let you know it’s potty time.

Another thing that helps in housebreaking a puppy is keeping their diet consistent. High quality premium brand dry puppy food is a better choice that canned food or table scrapes. If you need to change their food for any reason try and do it gradually over a period of 5-8 days, gradually increasing the amount of new food each day.

Remember, the more changes you make the more difficult housebreaking your puppy will be.

During the day when your puppy can not be supervised I highly recommend your puppy, or young dog, be kept in a crate or a small confined area. If done properly crate training is a safe and very effective way of housebreaking a puppy. In order for the crate to be used in housebreaking a puppy it should not be used for long periods of time or for punishment.

This my sound like common sense but puppies need to urinate soon after they eat, drink water, or sleep. Those having troubles housebreaking a puppy tend not to think about that. Another thing that is over looked is the fact that most puppies over 13 weeks of age will need to go 8 or 10 times a day.

So, keep a record of your puppies potty times for a few days. The secret to housebreaking a puppy is figuring out the amount of time between potty times and subtracting about 15  20 minutes.

For housebreaking a puppy we call the “Safety Zone”. By doing this we can figure out how long our little puppy can be trusted to hold out after their last potty break.

Another trick to housebreaking a puppy is not setting him up to fail. What I mean by this not allowing them access to areas of carpeting, rugs, etc. Puppies like certain places to do their business. When you find one make a note of it and try and keep them away from it.

When your little angel does have an accident, despite their best intentions, use a neutralizer with an enzyme based deodorizer to clean the area. There are a number of pet safe products available and should be added to your housebreaking kit.

One area that is overlooked is submissive peeing. It is completely involuntary and scolding your puppy for it will do more harm than good. It should be avoided at all cost.

The last thing you need to do when housebreaking a puppy is to use lots of praise. Find a trigger word both you and your puppy can live with and use that in combination with praise and rewards as soon as your puppy potties . This positive reinforcement lets your puppy know that you’re pleased with them and they will try even harder to please you.

This command is a very useful command and is relatively easy to teach your dog. After learning the sit command, this command should be a breeze for you. Getting your dog to be able to lie down and wait while you go into a shop or walk away is a very useful command and is also key to gaining trust and a good relationship with your dog.

This command should be firstly taught indoors or in a comfortable place your dog is used to learning and doing commands for you, and then as time goes on and your dog gets better at achieving success with the command, you should take it into a public place with lots of interests and new smells to distract them. This should test the strength and commitment your dog has for the down command.

To start, make sure your dog is in the mood for training and preferably in a hungry and wanting mood where they will be more than happy to please you if it means they get a treat, just before meal times is generally a good time for training and will help the progress of your dog.

When you are ready to begin and you have your dogs treats to-hand, start by getting your dog to sit for you, followed by a reward .Then let your dog know you have another treat in your hand for him and slowly lower it in front of him, going lower and lower, as the treat gets lowered closer to the ground your dog will be forced into the down position with their belly firmly on the floor and paws ahead of them.

As soon as your dogs belly touches the floor, the command ‘down’ should be said and you should reward them with praise, encouragement and the treat you used. This makes the dog associate the command with the action and the action with a reward to help your dog training process.

If your dog steps out of line during the training exercise, gently punish them accordingly. After you have learnt this command and you now think you’re ready for the next step, try taking your dog into a distracting place or area, or playing with their ball around them. When you have your dog under control at all times using the down command it is time to move on to more advanced dog training and you have now got a new trick to show your friends and family.
