    The Expansiveness Of Pet Stores

    Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Nowadays pet stores are like little mini-malls. No matter what type of critter you have, it is likely you’ll find all of its needs at a pet store.

The main focus for most big pet stores is still dogs and cats. And of course this includes any accessory you can think of. You would expect to find food. Well, it is in huge supply. Most pet specific stores carry mostly high-end brands and some mid-priced brands as well. There are food for all stages of life and food designed for certain situations. For example, cat food for households with more than one cat, indoor cats and outdoor cats.

In addition to food and treats, there are entire shelves dedicated to supplements. The most commonly purchased supplement is glucosamine which is good for joint problems and arthritis. Shelves will also have fish oils, vitamins, even additives for pets’ drinking water to help keep teeth clean.

Dog houses, Kitty condos, beds and a large selection of toys are always right in arm’s reach. So are water purifiers, leashes and collars and cat litter. These are probably things you would expect to find at the pet store. But I bet every time you go, you can find something new that you never thought of or saw before. A massage blanket for your dog or cat might be one of those things.

Tropical and salt water fish are also plentiful. From simple goldfish to exotic crayfish, tanks are fully stocked. The tanks are not just stocked with fish either. There are frogs and other amphibians, snails and a variety of corals. And of course you can find aquariums of all sizes. From tiny little bowls, ideal for a betta (the popular Siamese Fighting Fish) to 200 gallon tanks, you will find what you are looking for in the pet stores.

A good idea for aquariums is live plants. These are perfect for keeping oxygen levels right and give a nice homey feeling to your finned friends. A lot of fish like to hide or graze in these plants. Plants also add a nice realistic look to the tank. You can find plants that grow up from the floor of the tank and mossy types that float on the top.

Don’t forget about birds and rodents. You’ll be able to hear the chirps and yells from parrots and parakeets the moment you step inside. And if you listen carefully, you can also hear the squeaks from mice, rats and hamsters. Accessories for them, like wood chips and play wheels are always in stock. Snakes, ferrets and iguanas will also grab your attention.

A lot of the time, you can bring your pet into the shop with you. Most stores offer bathing, nail clipping and grooming so you can drop off your furry friend for a little pampering while you look around. Also on hand are veterinarians so when you schedule your pets’ doctor visits, you know you can do some shopping.

Pet stores can be as big as department stores. You may spend hours inside and not be bored. Bringing your pet along will make his day and will make shopping for pet supplies more fun.

Realizing The Importance Of Visiting A Veterinarian

    Saturday, January 16th, 2010

There is a particular importance to taking your pets to their Miami veterinarians annually and as needed. Doing so allows them to stay healthy and active throughout their lifetime. If your pet has been behaving differently lately or seems to be ill, a visit to the veterinarian should be considered. This is the best way possible for you to find out exactly what may be happening with your animals. It can also teach you a lot about them as well.

If you are a first time pet owner, you may have many questions about the care of your animal. The vet will usually have the answers you need as well as some advice. If you are curious about what to feed your animal, how much, or about daily supplements and other medications for your pet, consider asking the vet next time you go to visit.

Even people that have had a lot of experience taking care of pets may not have as much knowledge about animals as a veterinarian does. A vet has spent a lot of time studying about animals and what is required for their proper care. They have even spent years at educational institutions dedicated to these things. This is one of the ways they know so much about animals and are able to share their knowledge about them with you.

A veterinarian knows more and notices more about animals than the average person would be able to. They are required to in order to treat your animal. It allows them to be able to diagnose and treat your pet in any situation and give you the correct answers about what is going on. If you think that your pet has become sick, take it in to the vet soon in order to find out what the problem can be.

The prices you might expect to pay for veterinarian services can vary depending on what you are getting done. It is typically inexpensive to get injections and vaccinations for your pet done. However, medication or surgery can typically cost more.Discuss the options and find out if there are any discounts for the services that you need. Often times a vet will give you a payment plan for surgeries, especially if they are unexpected. The vet will work with your needs to make sure that the animal receives the proper care in the situation.

If you have recently taken in a stray animal, you should always take it into the vet to have it checked for any diseases or other problems. The same goes for animals that you have adopted. You need to make sure that the animals have received all of their proper shots and that they are not a threat to anyone by means of illness or other issues.

It is very important to take your pet to the veterinarian. In fact, it is just as important as it is for humans to go to their own doctor regularly. You should focus on your pet’s health as much as your own, truthfully. Try to keep them as healthy and active as you would for yourself. Not taking a sick or injured pet to the veterinarian is a form of animal neglect.

A world without veterinarians would be very hard to deal with. Imagine all of the sick animals that wouldn’t receive any care because no one would know how to help them. Next time you take a trip to the vet with your animal, remember to thank them for the hard work they do and the care that they provide to your animal companions.

Getting Started With Dog Potty Training

    Saturday, January 16th, 2010

The first step in dog training is to potty train your dog or puppy. For a new, grown dog the process has to start from day one, to make sure that the dog never soils your house.

Your care and patience can go a long way as it could take the puppy weeks to develop the right habits. Preferably this should be done when the animal is a young pup (6 to 8 weeks old).

Puppy’s have a certain behavior when they want to use the bathroom, it is important to pay attention to this behavior. Recognizing this behavior will let you know when to command them and eventually reward them when it is doing what you want it to do.

The ultimate goal to attain in potty training a puppy is to train the dog to use the bathroom when and where you want it to. Right before a puppy is about to urinate or excrete, it will usually circle a certain spot and squat. When your dog does this, physically remove the dog, take it outside, and command it. Eventually this ritual will register in the puppy’s head and it will signal when it needs to go out.

Puppies can’t ‘hold it’ for very long and need to be taken outside often. If you are not able to take the puppy outside, do not get angry, it will only confuse the dog and prolong the potty training process.

During this period the same commands should be given when its potty time. Habits should start to develop and the animal should become more responsive to the commands. Doing this every few hours may be a good idea.

If your puppy uses the bathroom outside when you instruct it to, you should start using your command to test if it is working. When you start associating behavior with a command, the dog will start understanding the command. When it responds correctly to the command, it should be rewarded.

Also remember that you should not use any kind of device or paper to aid in the training. This may cause bad habits and in the long term not good for the health of the puppy.

    Mandarin New Year Animal Symbolism

    Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Do you want to know which animal you could be? Find out the legendary origins of the Chinese New Year animals.

The occasion of Chinese New Year is without a doubt considered to be the most prominent event in the Chinese lunar calendar. The cultural celebrations have been going on for years and the festive spirit is pretty much alive even today. The unique characteristic of the Chinese New Year is however the twelve year cycle that associates the coming of the year with an animal symbol.

The Chinese New Year animal follows a twelve year cycle and hence repeats. According to their present status, the next year should be the year of the Ox. The ancient philosophers of China have done a research on the behavior of the animals and have drawn a similarity between their personality characteristics and human nature.

Thereby if any person is born on the year of a certain animal he is supposed to bear resemblance to the nature of the animal of that particular year. Any individual who has taken birth in the year of the ox is bound to have good organizational talent and they are considerably dependable and loyal. Also such people are patient and strong.

It is believed that the twelve year concept of the animals representing each year is deduced from the Buddhist dharma. According to the history Buddha himself called the animals prior to his coming to the Earth. Moreover, a competition was held amongst these animals where the animal that came first would be assigned to the first year.

The race began with heavy contesting between the animals. The sly rat after making a deal with the cat decided to cheat. All the while it looked like the Ox would win the race as it maneuvered through the crowd. But the ox was unaware of the fact that the clever rat was sitting on his back all through the race and when he came close to the ending line, the rat jumped off his back and became the winner.

Hence, we will see that the starting year of the twelve year lunar cycle is the year of the rat as he cleverly managed to come first in the race and then it is followed by the year of ox as the hardworking animal secured second place. The ox is then followed by the rest of the animals in order of the positions they secured with pig having the last position.

If you are thinking why just twelve animals came to Buddha and why specifically these animals then keep wondering because you will find no answers to these questions! The fact of the matter is that this is an age-old tradition which has been kept alive up till today and is deeply embedded in the Chinese culture. As a token of appreciation for their coming Buddha apparently assigned a year to each of the animals and that’s the way the legend has it.

Chinese new year animals are symbols with deeper meanings . If you want to read about how to give the traditional Chinese New Year greetings click on the preceding links.

    Elbow Dysplasia in Your Dog

    Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Bigger dogs are prone to certain arthritic and bone conditions. Elbow Dysplasia is a very common condition found in larger breeds of dogs. Elbow Dysplasia can be detected between the ages of 4 and 10 months and is a condition that is caused by abnormal bone, tissue and cell growth.

This condition is typically found in larger dogs like Chow Chows, Rottweilers, Golden and Labrador retrievers and other larger and giant breed dogs. This form of development abnormalities can lead to lameness and elbow pain. There is also one type that afflicts males more than females.

In the condition that affects the males more than the females, the bone fragment is located in the inner surface of the upper ulna. This ulna bone is located in the foreleg just below the elbow joint. Either way, both conditions need to be checked by a vet.

Not all large dogs will show symptoms when they are young even if they are affected. If your dog shows signs of forelimb lameness that can also be irritated by exercise, which then turns to stiffness, this could be a sign of elbow Dysplasia. Also, when the dog extends or flexes his elbow or the dog will hold the affected limb away from his body.

Whatever the reason for this condition, we suggest that you seek out a professional for their opinion. This condition can be genetic, caused by nutrition or during development. That’s why we suggest you carefully observe your pup to see if it begins to display signs of Dysplasia.

The symptoms can mean a number of things like joint trauma, possible infection or even some sort of arthritis. The Doctor will take x-rays of the affected limb as well as the other and run more tests before coming to a conclusion. If it is determined to be Elbow Dysplasia, then surgery might be recommended.

After surgery, keep the dog’s limb iced down throughout the recover process to avoid excessive swelling. Control your dogs weight, keep him from being very active in the beginning but remember to encourage some mobility. Also, the possibility of medications might be involved in your dog’s recovery.

If you monitor your dogs diet you can help prevent the onset of Dysplasia. Keeping them from rapidly growing by managing their diet can help. If you have a dog that has been diagnosed with Dysplasia, it’s best that you do not breed them.

Large dogs are prone to this condition so it’s not anything to be overly worried about. However, if you purchased your dog from a breeder, better to let them know about the condition. Dogs with Dysplasia can live long happy lives; just remember to keep up with their yearly checkups.

    All About Basic Dog Training

    Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Your dog isn’t just a pet, he’s part of the family. And just like you teach your kids to be productive and socially acceptable you have to teach your dog to be productive and socially acceptable too. An obedient, socially acceptable dog is a joy to you and everyone else too. But like children, a dog needs training to develop social skills and to become obedient.

Obedience is not something that’s completely natural to dogs. They need to be shown how to obey. The best way to accomplish that is through firmness and kindness, never through physical pain. Do not ever hit or slap your dog for any reason, it only makes them more anxious and can lead to aggressiveness. You will need to be patient and have a lot of perseverance.

You’re going to have to persevere, because your dog can’t learn something having done it just once. It will have to be practiced over and over again just as some human habits need a lot of practice.

This kind of repetition will be well worth your effort. You’ll have a well-behaved dog at home and you’ll be able to take your pet into the outside world and people will be glad you’re there with him because behavior will be so good.

How wonderful to be able to walk into a retail space with your dog and have the merchant welcome you once it is realized that your pet will not knock things over or dirty up the store.

Dogs respond to leadership as they’re used to following an alpha or lead dog. So show you have that capacity and you’ve won your dog over. When you don’t have it, the canine has to take up the slack and lead you around, which is never a good scene. You’ll actually have a stronger and better relationship when it’s not quite an equal one because you’ll have your pet’s respect.

If you wish to take your dog to a school, there are a number of good ones. Training the dog can save his life or yours in a tragic situation. When a dog has been trained and knows what to do, he can save a situation. The training is very help because they have learned to listen to you and will respond to your commands. They will understand what to do.

It’s also important that you understand your dog’s speed and capability to learn. All dogs are different, and in order to properly train your dog you need to understand that. You also need to pay attention to how your dog is feeling, and take his feelings into consideration while you are training him. It will help to get him fully trained as a good and obedient dog.

Use Rubber Mats To Prevent Slip And Fall Accidents.

    Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Business owners will appreciate the convenience and safety that is offered by installing rubber mats at the entry and in other sections of their place of business to prevent trip and fall accidents.

While you may have insurance to cover such accidents, any time you have a customer enter your business place, there is the possibility of an accident. While you are not able to prevent all the accidents, you can show the courts that you have taken steps to prevent as many as possible. One of the simplest of these precautions is to have rubber mats at all entries. This can help to prevent tracking of rain or snow from being tracked inside and causing the possibility of a wet floor on which one of your customers could fall.

Customers may slip on produce that has been dropped in a grocery store and fall causing an injury. Even thought the produce was dropped by another customer, as owner of the business, you can be held responsible. Once again, it is possible that you could find yourself or your insurance company paying the doctor’s bills and for wages that have been lost due to an injury that took place in your place of business.

Providing the mats at the customer entry and using runners in areas where customers might slip can lower the chance that a customer may be injured.

Other areas where these tools can be used include businesses where fast food is prepared. Since there is often a buildup of oils and fats on the floors in the kitchen, they can become hazardous for your employees. Use of easily changeable runners can prevent worker’s compensation claims by preventing employee injuries.

You will appreciate that the runners or mats can be quickly rolled up when dirty and a clean one can be put out in its place. Meanwhile, be sure that workers work to keep floors and other surfaces clear of all spills. Make it a company policy that all floors and mats are mopped using an ammonia based detergent and hot water to remove grease and prevent a hazard.

In addition, the use of rubber mats can protect floor coverings from the dirt as well as grime that is often brought in form outside. It is much easier to clean the entry runner or mat than to clean the entire floor. Entry runners that can easily be exchanged in only a few seconds are a great way to cut overhead. Once removed, they can be cleaned by use of either a garden hose or a pressure washer and allowed to dry for reuse.

If you business involves workers that are often out in muddy fields, a mat that has holes pressed through on the outside works well to allow this mud and dirt to drop off and be trapped in the holes rather than in the carpet inside.

If you are looking for a simple way to protect your business from the possibility of being sued or simply to protect your floor coverings from all the dirt that can be tracked into your place of business, rubber mats are a simple solution that can also be inexpensive. They can be used at entries or other areas where hazards exist.

A reliable source of high-quality rubber mats is a great investment to make. Stall mats not only help your horses’ health, but they are also more convenient in terms of maintenance.

Potbelly Pig – Should You Adopt A Potbellied Pig?

    Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Now it is not surprising to find people that keep potbellied pigs as pets. In fact it is an animal that has been popular as an alternative to dogs and cats since the 1970s. There was a time when the most common form of potbellied pig was the Vietnamese variety but today there are many other breeds including miniature pigs.

Before you rush out to a pet shop and bring your new addition to the family back, it is important that you fully understand how to take care of your new pet. It will require a different form of care then you may have been used to.

It is important to point out that the myth that pigs are smelly creatures is untrue. They give off no more odours than a cat or dog. If they are well trained they should produce very little mess. As with most pets it is up to you to clear up any nasty accidents. You can train a pig to use a petdoor in the same manner that dogs do.

A potbellied pig will need space. If you only have a small house or apartment then ask yourself whether it really is a wise choice. You will want to have a yard or garden so that in the summer months your little porker can get fresh air and play outdoors. Make sure that there is some shade from the sun as pigs can get burnt in the same way as we do.

Exercise is essential for any animal. If you are to have a pig as a pet then you should be willing to exercise it on a regular basis.

You may feel a little strange at first as people are going to stop and stare. But it can be a wonderful way of striking up conversations with people you meet in the park.

Finally, there is a place to go where you can learn everything you want to know about potbellied pigs. If you are thinking of getting a potbelly pig, or just want to learn more about them, you can do it today!
