Dog Training – Easy Dog Tricks

    Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
There are plenty of dog tricks around to choose from but starting off with your first puppy or dog and knowing which dog tricks are easy can be a bit of a challenge. If you have a puppy then training them will be a lot easier than an older dog because of the habits dogs fall into when they are brought up.

Older dogs will have different habits and a strong personality by then so they may find some advanced tricks easier than basic tricks because of the way they have been brought up.

Although the same as above can be true for puppies also, this is more likely to be because of the breed of dog you have and the different general personalities that go with them breeds.

In this article we assume you have taught your dog the basics or sit and stay etc and now you want to teach your dog a fun ‘show-off’ type trick to impress your friends or family when they visit. There are many tricks from bringing you the TV remote to riding a skateboard, but to start off I recommend something simple like the figure of eight around your legs.

This is similar to other commands you will have taught your dog and involves you using treats to encourage your dog to perform actions. To do this trick you simply have hold a treat in one hand and guide your dog through one side of your legs, through the middle then around to complete a figure of eight motion. Try to hold the treat close to your dog’s nose to keep them interested and always reward them with praise afterwards and the treat afterwards.

After you have mastered this and can get your dog to do it on command you’re ready for your next trick and one step closer to the skateboard. Good luck!

    Dog Shows Explained…

    Thursday, June 4th, 2009

At dog shows, breed shows or compliance shows, dogs are closely scrutinized to see if they conform to the breed criteria set for the competition. Both kennel clubs and breed clubs conduct regular shows. Where only special breeds are examined, they are commonly called specialty shows.

Standards set before the show by the judges of the show is the basis of judging. Matching the set standards laid out for the show is an extremely tough task as the judgement is totally subjective. One dog is not only compared to another dog but also to the judge’s image of an ideal dog which meet the breed standard almost perfectly. Selecting the winning dog requires it comes up to the breed standard necessary and that is the objective of the dog show.

Based on the long list of breed standards, judges get together to frame the conformation point. Conformity points can vary from one competition to another, but there are certain prerequisites that are general. Although the pet’s color, pattern, length, type and quality are observed, in the final analysis the fur is still the most important factor. The distribution, quality and number of the markings will be carefully scrutinized by the judges.

A pigmentation free healthy skin and the shape and color of the head are other important determinants that the judges look for. Then judges will also take into consideration the general attitude and temperament of each breed of dogs. The jaw-line and the structure of the teeth and how they align when the jaw is shut are also considered. The judgement is also based on the shape and color of the eyes and the shape and set of ears, including the ratio of the length and height. The style of walking and gait the shape of the tail and feet are closely observed – the dogs, which enter such competitions, should be well groomed. It is necessary to register the name of the participating dog, breeder and breeder kennel to facilitate identification.

Because every dog can have a registered name as well as a pet name, the kennel club uses the registered name while the owner refers to the pet using the call name. Challengers from different parts of the country never fail to take the opportunity to participate in the many dog shows held at these various levels. Usually dog shows are hierarchic competitions where the winners earn certain points in each show at each level, which makes them eligible for the next show.

To ensure that the chosen champion is the best in the breed, these shows at the highest level only allow pets that have already won championships in other shows. It is only natural that the puppies of the champion dog breed fetch a high price because the shows help to boost the reputation of the dog, kennel and breeder. Since it is only natural for people looking for a pet to look around for one that resembles the champion, the champion breed quickly becomes very popular. There are two such prestigious shows, Crufts in the United Kingdom and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in the United States.
